Program Description:
The Germanic-American Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota is seeking an instructor for a new after-school, extra-curricular German program at Kenwood School, a K-5 elementary school located near Lake of the Isles in southwest Minneapolis.
   The emphasis of the GAI children’s language program is natural acquisition of language in an interactive, fun environment.  A standard routine is adhered to in our classes, which incorporates listening and speaking, singing, crafts, games, physical motion, and story time.  
   Instruction and class activities will be conducted primarily in German, with emphasis on oral language development.  Children with minimal prior exposure to German will acquire basic communication skills and general vocabulary pertaining to the topics presented.  Simple worksheets with reading and writing will be provided to reinforce skills throughout the week.
   For the fall term, classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3pm beginning October 1st.  Meeting dates will be in conjunction with the Minneapolis Public Schools calendar, with the last session on January 16, 2014.  Minimum class size is 10 students ranging from K-5th grade.  For more information, please visit http://www.gai-mn.org/classes/kenwood.html

Qualifications and Responsibilities:
Teacher must be a native or native-like German speaker able to demonstrate successful experience teaching language to elementary-aged children. Curriculum development will be required, as well as one parent presentation near the end of each semester to showcase students’ progress.  The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, energetic teacher able to relate well to children while simultaneously keeping them interested in German and maintaining classroom discipline.

Kinderclub Program Description

Kinderclub is a program of the Germanic-American Institute. Kinderclub is the before-and- after-school care program for students of the Twin Cities German Immersion School. The school offers grades K-8, and is located at 1031 Como Avenue in St. Paul.

During the School year
Kinderclub operates Monday-Friday, mornings from 6:30-8:00 a.m. and after school from 3:15-6:00 p.m. Once a month on early release Wednesdays, the Kinderclub afternoon program is from 12:45-6:00. On selected school release dates, Kinderclub is in operation 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Position hours: 20-25 hours/week. Flexible days
Starting Wage: $14-$17/hour DOE
Start Date: Training to begin in August, 2013. First day of school is September 3.

During the summer
Kinderclub operates during the summer at the Germanic-American Institute from 8 am-6pm in conjunction with the GAI kids’ language camps. The Kinderclub Director’s hours during the summer may be negotiated with the Executive Director.

Kinderclub Director Primary Responsibilities

1. Oversee daily before- and- after-school operations of Kinderclub program, including but not limited to
-train, supervise, and work alongside assistant teachers
-ensure daily classroom order and child-friendly learning atmosphere
-act as primary contact between Kinderclub, GAI, and TCGIS regarding program concerns
-communicate to parents relevant information regarding Kinderclub program and their child’s involvement
2. Payment collection and recording, including but not limited to
-generate monthly Kinderclub invoices
-process incoming payments
-maintain accurate records of all invoices and payments received and forward info to GAI Bookkeeper
-follow-up with clients regarding any billing concerns

3. Teacher Schedule
-create and post in a timely manner weekly teacher schedule
-ensure that each Kinderclub shift is adequately staffed

4. Various Administrative Assistance duties as requested such as
-completing timely background checks for new hires and volunteers
-ordering/procuring supplies
- maintaining student files
-other misc. duties as agreed upon with the GAI Executive Director

The KC Director should expect to work in the classroom a minimum of 3 after-school classroom shifts per week. An additional app. 10-15 hours per week is allocated for administrative duties.

Kinderclub Director Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor’s degree
  • Fluency/strong proficiency in German. Ability to communicate well in a German immersion environment.
  • Experience working with elementary aged children in a professional setting
  • Excellent organizational skills; Experience in processing/managing employer-related records
  • Genuine enthusiasm for teaching and working with children
