The Germanic-American Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota is accepting applications for lead teacher positions for its 2014 summer language camps. Camps run throughout the summer, each lasting one week (Monday-Friday) and meeting daily from 9am-12pm. Children who attend are 6-12 years old, with a variety of German ability levels.

Lead teachers are responsible for developing the curriculum for the week, including all related craft and outdoor activities, as well as additional prep-work related to the camp.

Note: The GAI will post positions for camp teaching assistants later in the spring.

Qualifications:

§ Fluency in German § At least 1 year professional experience/training teaching German or equivalent
§ Successful experience working with elementary-aged children
§ Strong ability to design highly-interactive, kid friendly learning activities

Compensation: $400-$600/week. Lead teachers are contracted on a weekly basis. Accommodation is not provided.

To Apply: Send the following information by January 20 to the GAI Language Services Coordinator, Anne Grossardt, at agrossardt@gai-mn.org. Most instructors will only be selected for one camp, though more are possible.

1) A short summary of your teaching credentials and experience, a resume if possible.
2) The weeks during June 16th-August 18th for which you would be available to teach, as well as your preferred week(s) to be assigned.
3) If possible, your idea(s) for a camp theme including a brief description, although this can be decided later. See example below:

Roman Gladiators and Germanic Tribes

We will travel back to the ancient time of Roman gladiators and Germanic tribes. Children will experience firsthand how the Romans impacted Germania and world culture. Activities will include games and crafts such as archery, jewelry and map-making, spear throwing, wagon races, food preparation, clothing design, and more. The week will culminate with a celebratory festival.

Other popular themes from past years have included: Dinosaurs & Volcanoes, German Fairy Tales, Fun with Sports and Games, and A Journey through Europe. Themes do not need to directly relate to German culture, and we encourage thinking outside the box!

Questions? Please contact Anne at agrossardt@gai-mn.org / 651.222.2979 for further information about our camps and the lead teacher position.

Five-week Workshop in Berlin this Summer -- funding available.

  Minnesota AATG  News Item

Prof. Robert R. Shandley and I are teaching a five-week-long seminar in Berlin June 22-July 27, 2014. It's the third time that NEH has funded the seminar that's intended for K-12 teachers with at least intermediate mid German proficiency. The topic is timely and important: Migration and German Culture: Berlin's Cultural Diversity Across Two Centuries. We have room for 16 participants, and each of them receives $3900 to help defray expenses. Since Berlin is still remarkably inexpensive, German teachers or others interested in the topic will get to spend some quality time immersed in the culture with very few out-of-pocket costs. All the information about deadlines, eligibility, housing, the syllabus and much more are on the website.  https://www2.lawrence.edu/fast/petersob/NEH/
I'm also available to answer people's questions.

 Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Brent Peterson

From Anita Ratwik: K-6 Curriculum Materials Available

Dr. Paul Garcia, who was responsible for starting and building all the world language immersion schools in Kansas City, including the German immersion school, has sent me the entire curriculum they developed for the K-6 German immersion school, about 10 inches of papers. It is not new, but there are still things that could be very useful to someone willing to go through it.
Paul also taught the pre-service classes for world language teachers at university in Kansas for many years, and in FLorida after that. He was president of ACTFL and very active in AATG. He is still a voice in our profession.

I am hoping that someone is willing to look these papers over, use what they can and recycle what they can't.
We could exchange them Friday at MCTLC or they can be picked up from my home. I would drop them off, if you don't live too far from me.
Anyone interested, please contact me before Friday. Thank you
